Antwerp The city of Antwerp lying on the banks of the Scheldt which flows into the North Sea is the capital of the eponymous Flemish province and simultaneously is the largest city in Flanders. Antwerp is a home to just over half a million people. Founded in the early Middle Ages the port city captivates tourists with the maze of streets that have retained a special flavor and spirit of antiquity. The Gothic Cathedral of the Virgin (built in 1521), Castle Walls of the XIII century and the Town Hall (built in the XIV century) brought fame to the city. The Belfry of Belfort included in the UNESCO World Heritage List is considered to be the hallmark of Antwerp. Walking through the historic center of the city you will admire a large number of palaces. Many of them transferred to museums now.

Every year millions of tourists visit Antwerp; many of our compatriots who organize self-organized tours prefer to get to the largest city in Flanders by air. Antwerp Airport is located in just 4 kilometers apart from the provincial capital. Excursion program suggests visiting the Royal Museum of Art and the Academy of Fine Arts, the Rubens House Museum (great painter who was born in Antwerp just as Van Dyck and Brueghel). The National Maritime Museum, located in a medieval castle of Walls should be also cited as a must-see place of interest. Many tourists are attracted by the Mayer Van Den Berg Museum dedicated to jewelry.

It is difficult to imagine a  vacation to Antwerp without visiting jewelry stores – they attract even those travelers who do not plan to buy jewelry. Antwerp is widely recognized as a diamond center of Europe. The main attractions of the Belgian part of the regional capital is the famous Antwerp Zoo which attracts tourists of all ages.

Opera lovers can spend their time in the Royal Flemish Opera.
