Palma de Mallorca is the capital of Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It serves as the capital not only for the single island, but also for the entire archipelago which includes Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and many smaller islands in addition to Majorca. Palma de Mallorca is located in the eponymous bay being 20 km in width and 25 km in length. It is believed that the Bay of Palma de Mallorca on a par with the Gulf of Naples is one of the most beautiful bays in the world.
Palma de Mallorca was founded by the Roman consul Cecilia Metella. Topped with a wreath of palm leaves he showed the picturesque hill hanging over the sea upon his arrival in Majorca. A city was eventually founded in 123 BC under his direct control. The city was named in honor of the palm leaves.
Both sides of the Bay of Palma de Mallorca are the most popular resort areas of the island. They are connected via the longest beach on the island which stretches along the paved pedestrian promenade. Here in the shade of palm trees there are many shops, restaurants and bars.
